Chinese LanternsChinese Lanterns Ref: BCP001
Chinese Lanterns
2006
Artist's oil colour and charcoal on linen
35" x 27"

SOLD

Notes: In 2005 Childish painted a series of flower paintings for an exhibition at the aquarium called "Our Friend Billy Childish". All the exhibition paintings sold and Billy painted this one the following year for himself. After plenty of coercion by us, it is now for sale. The curious flowerpot with breasts is one made by the artist's mother June Hamper.

Girl with Pipe and Hart in Hands (Universal Man and Woman Diptych).Girl with Pipe and Hart in Hands (Universal Man and Woman Diptych). Ref: BCP008
Girl Smoking Pipe and Man with Hart - Universal Man and Woman
2006 - 2007
Artist's oil colour linen.
2 canvases framed together behind glass as a diptych.
Each canvas 120 x 60 cm

P.O.A.

Notes: The man pictured here references William Harvey who discovered the circulation of blood. His companion is pictured as a Native American princess.

Strange HeroStrange Hero Ref: BCP004
The Strange Hero of Hunger
2005
Artist's oil colour and charcoal on timber
26" x 32"

P.O.A.

Notes: The title refers to Knut Hamsun's novel "Hunger", and "i am the strange hero of hunger" is also the title of a poem written by Childish. The artist started painting on timber in the early 1990's but it's rare for him to do so now.

St John's ChurchSt John's Church Ref: BCP005
St. John's Church
2005
Artist's oil colour on linen
24" x 18"

P.O.A.

Notes: St. John's Church, Chatham built by Robert Smirke in 1819 -12, features in many of Childish's paintings. It stands on the west side of railway road but is cut off from the town centre by the one way system. It is now shamefully derelict.

Girl with Blue Face.Girl with Blue Face. Ref: BC GWBF painting
Girl with Blue Face
2008
Artist's oil colour on primed canvas
23.5" x 17.75" in glazed beach box frame

P.O.A.

Notes: This painting appeared in "I Fill All of Your Dreams", an exhibition curated by Neal Brown at THE AUARIUM L-13 in April 2008.

DrunkDrunk Ref: BCP002
Drunk
Circa 1991
Artist's oil colour on linen
36" x 24"

P.O.A

Notes: A superb example of an early 1990's piece that stylistically suggests the more deconstructed period to follow in the mid to late 1990's and the loose painterly impasto of more recent work. Childish gave up drinking in 1993.

RosehipRosehip Ref: BCP003
By the Rosehip Bush
2003
Artist's oil colour and charcoal on linen
14" x 10"
P.O.A.

Notes: This painting shows the view from the artist's studio.

Under the ClockUnder the Clock Ref: BCP006
Under the Clock
2004
Artist's oil colour on linen
14" x 10"

SOLD

Notes: This almost hallucinatory scene pictures the artist on his way home in the early hours of the morning, passing beneath the large ornate clock that hangs over Rochester High Street. This is a common theme of Childish's remembered over the years.

Foot of BedFoot of Bed Ref: BCP007
Foot of Bed (study)
2005
Artist's oil colour on linen
14" x 10"

SOLD

P.O.A.

Notes: A great little study from a larger painting that was later destroyed by the artist.

Sleeping CoupleSleeping Couple Ref: BCP009
Sleeping Couple
2007
Artist's oil colour and charcoal on linen
72" x 48"

P.O.A.

Notes: An intimate scene painted on a large scale.

Self Portrait in Knitted HatSelf Portrait in Knitted Hat Ref: BCP010
Self Portrait in Knitted Hat
2003
Artist's oil colour on linen
48" x 24"

P.O.A.

Notes: This is one of the first paintings in a series started in 2004 that revisited a series of self portraits painted over the summer of 1982. The early works were very graphic in style and depicted a hard shell-like youth, but this and others in the later series show a more mortal human being. This and four other self portraits were used for the artist's book "i am here to build jurrusolom".

SOLD
Shivering SandsShivering Sands Ref: BCP011
Shivering Sands
2007
Artist's oil colour and charcoal on linen
72" x 48"

P.O.A.

Notes: A beautiful scene showing the sea forts where servicemen went mad whilst defending the Thames Estuary during the second world war.

In 5 Minits You'll Know MeIn 5 Minits You'll Know Me Ref: BCP012
In 5 Minits You'll Know Me
1998
Artist's oil colour on primed canvas
36" x 24"

P.O.A.

Notes: A superb example of careless, deconstructed, emotive brilliance.

GallowsGallows Ref: BCP0013
Hangman Gallows
1992
Artist's oil colour and charcoal on timber with household wire and nails.
14" x 10"

P.O.A.

Notes: A very early timber piece that used to hang in the artist's bathroom and appeared on the cover of a Spanish 10" record that was recorded in the same bathroom. 26 similar pieces based on this original were made for a limited edition box set that accompanied Childish's first exhibition at the aquarium "We're All Phonies" in 2003. We still have one of these box sets for sale. Please enquire.
